Deconstructed Self-Portrait


Step 1: Watch through this presentation:

For this project, you will be looking at the proportions of a face and learning how to draw a face. This will be just you drawing the proportions of a random face. The self-portrait will come later...

Step 1: Look through the presentation above.

Step 2: Follow the examples in the presentation and the steps below to draw the proportions of a face.

  • Draw an oval shape for the head.

  • Halfway down the oval, make a line for the eyes, and then half of that will be the line for the nose. The other half of that will be the mouth. See the presentation and video for guidance!

  • Add the ears, which usually go as high as the halfway point where you drew the eyes.

  • Draw the neck, and make sure it comes in from the oval of the face.

  • Now that you have all the lines drawn out, go through and follow the presentation as it walks you through creating details like eyes, a nose (The nose is a lot of steps, so make sure you follow them closely.), and a mouth. Reference my video and the presentation when trying to create these different details.

  • Add in shading and hair to complete your image! Make this drawing your own.

Step 3:

  • When this work of art is finished, we will move on to our "Deconstructed Self-Portrait"

  • This practice portrait will need to be submitted online along with the self-portrait (think of this one as our warm-up)

Part 2: Deconstructed Self-Portrait

Using your school photo - “deconstruct” yourself and create a collage-type project showcasing different materials or mediums

Rules:

  1. Has to be creative and changed in 3 different ways

  2. One of the ways has to be drawing part of it

  3. Part of the original photo has to be left



Before you submit this creative work ask yourself a few questions. Ask yourself if you spent enough time to make this work the best that it can be, or did you just rush at the end to get it done? If you just rushed at the end, what are you going to do differently next week? Really self-evaluate your work and your process of working. What can you do to improve? What does improvement look like? Did you take into account the different resources and artists/designers we have learned about in this class? These are all questions to consider before you turn work in to be graded.
